For the WP-AI Assistant to work securely, you need to provide an OpenAI API key. We highly recommend using a Restricted Key rather than a key with “All” permissions. This follows the “Principle of Least Privilege” and ensures that if your key is ever accidentally exposed, your OpenAI account and billing remain completely safe.
Here is the exact checklist of permissions you need to select when creating your restricted key:
1. Essential Permissions (Required for all users)
These are the minimum permissions required for the chat widget to function and to keep your bot safe from spam.
Model capabilities: Write (or Request)
Why you need it: This is the core engine. It allows the plugin to send chat messages to OpenAI and receive the AI’s responses.
List models: Read
Why you need it: This allows your WP-AI Assistant admin dashboard to securely fetch the list of available models (like GPT-4o or GPT-4o-mini) so you can select which one you want to use.
Moderations: Write (or Request)
Why you need it: This powers our built-in security layer. It allows the plugin to use OpenAI’s free moderation tool to scan and block offensive or malicious user messages before they cost you any AI tokens.
2. Pro Features (Required if using the Knowledge Base)
If you are using the Pro or Commerce Pro tiers to train the AI on your own website data, PDFs, or CSVs, you must also enable these:
Files: Write
Why you need it: Allows the plugin to securely upload your scraped website data and documents to your private OpenAI account so the bot can read them.
Vector Stores: Write
Why you need it: Allows OpenAI to index your uploaded files into a searchable database, enabling the AI to retrieve accurate answers from your company data instantly.
3. What to Leave Blank
To maximise security, ensure everything else on the list is set to None.
Do NOT enable: Prompts, Assistants, Threads, Fine-tuning, or Evals. The WP-AI Assistant does not need these, and leaving them disabled prevents anyone from altering your core AI instructions if the key is ever compromised.
Pro Security Tip: Set a Monthly Limit!
Even with a restricted key, you should always protect your wallet. Immediately after creating your API key, go to your OpenAI Dashboard’s Billing > Usage Limits section. Set a hard “Monthly Budget” (e.g., $10 or $20). This guarantees you will never receive an unexpected bill, even if your website gets a massive spike in traffic.

How to Add Your Prompt in WPAI Assistant
Setting up your AI’s brain takes less than a minute.
Step 1: Log in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard.
Step 2: In the left-hand menu, click on WPAI Assistant to open the plugin settings.
Step 3: Navigate to the General Settings.
Step 4: Look for the large text box labeled AI Personality & Instructions. Select from the dropdown templates or create your own.
Step 5: Type or paste your instructions into the box.
Step 6: Click Save Changes. Your AI will immediately adopt this new persona for all future chats!
Go to WPAI Assistant > General and paste your OpenAI API Key and Prompt ID into the settings fields.
